Finding alternative solutions to help keep batteries topped off during night time, cloudy days, winter time, and while wind wasn’t a viable option so 15 years ago I built a small Earth Battery trickle charger for my solar batteries. Back then John Bedini was building different cells and got me hooked on the idea, but he went to crystal cells and I stuck with Earth batteries. It worked and still works. Now, I found a book called Earth Batteries That Work on Amazon and it has many designs to choose from in detail. So I expanded upon the Earth battery setup and combined with my solar I am getting fully charged batteries by morning, but I can expect to also draw more during cloudy days if I need that power. Heading into winter will be a great test, but it still should work as before as it is just larger cells in the ground and the same 10amp charge controller to top off the batteries. So amazingly it turns out over 1800 communities are using Earth batteries including schools. So I thought I would share that if your options are limited such as lack of wind, shorter days, long winters, and more cloudy days. I want to build another setup just for my shop that will also be a hybrid solar/Earth battery setup, but that has to wait till next year. Now if you are an inventor or tinkerer you might come up with some better ideas to mix and match Earth batteries, wind, solar, or just whatever works and improve upon it. Yet, solar is my main and the Earth battery is my backup charging system, just because my setup is designed to be that way as I get great solar power most of the year. Anyway, new ideas that work are fun to share. Research it and see if it is cool enough for you. Thought I would share.
