I am writing this to warn other consumers about my recent experience with the Melbourne office of Target Solar. If you are considering them for your solar or battery installation, please read this first so you don’t waste your annual leave and money like I did.
My experience with this company was a catalogue of ignored warnings, wasted time, and high-pressure tactics. Here is the timeline of how they mishandled my project from start to finish.
1. Delays cost me the Commonwealth Rebate
Their inability to provide adequate customer support over the New Year period meant my installation was unnecessarily delayed into 2026. Because of this drag, I missed the deadline for the previous year’s Commonwealth solar rebate (STC) rates. This resulted in a direct reduction of the financial incentive available to me - a cost I had to absorb due to their sluggishness.
2. They ignored written warnings about my roof
The most glaring failure was their inability to identify or record basic site details.
-
15 January: Their representative emailed me noting their installer thought my roof was a mix of “tile and tin”.
-
16 January: I immediately corrected them in writing, stating explicitly: “Both the original house and the extension are tin roofing - the confusion probably relates to the fact the original house has tin stamped to look like tile.”
-
10 February (Installation Day): Despite my written clarification weeks in advance, the installation team arrived, took one look at the stamped tin roof, and refused to do the job. They claimed they couldn’t work on it without drilling, which they wouldn’t do for liability reasons.
Result: I lost a day of annual leave and the entire installation was abandoned on the spot because their office staff failed to pass on critical site information to the installers.
3. Refusal to coordinate on site preparation
Throughout January, I tried to be proactive to ensure a quality installation. I repeatedly offered to pour a concrete slab for the battery beforehand so it would have time to cure properly.
-
I asked for dimensions and location advice multiple times.
-
They dragged their feet, eventually asking for a video walkthrough (which I provided).
-
A week before the install, they told me no preparation was needed and the installers would “install their own concrete slabs on the same day.”
In hindsight, their refusal to engage with my site preparation queries was a massive red flag. They were not interested in planning; they were just rushing to get the job booked.
4. Aggressive stock retrieval during a family emergency
After the installation failed due to their error, the relationship turned nasty. I held onto the stock (panels and battery) securely in my shed until I had confirmation that my government rebates had been released so I could go with a competent provider.
Once that was confirmed, I arranged for collection.
-
I missed the initial pickup slot because I had to take my son for urgent medical care.
-
I apologised and offered alternative times later in the week.
-
Instead of understanding, their representative immediately applied significant pressure, citing “strict warehouse deadlines” and effectively threatening that costs might fall on me if the stock wasn’t returned within 24 hours.
I was forced to have my partner take time off work to facilitate their pickup the very next morning, just to get them off my back.
Summary
Target Solar’s Melbourne team demonstrated a complete lack of attention to detail. I did everything a customer could reasonably do: I clarified the roof material in writing, I offered to prep the site, and I secured their stock. In return, they reduced my rebate eligibility through delays, ignored my site data, wasted my leave, and then pressured my family during a medical emergency.
There are plenty of solar providers out there. Based on my experience, I strongly recommend you look elsewhere.
