Solar Power DC Metro, Northern Virginia

Hey Marty - just want to let you know that I called another (larger, I believe) solar company today to request an appointment. Wow…what an interesting experience!

The customer service rep set up a site visit appointment for me for tomorrow, but then called back a few minutes later and said her vice president replied to her request for my appointment and said “Please cancel - too many trees, customer will have to remove 4-5 large trees…” I was quite disappointed they wouldn’t even come out…

Then she called back again and said she spoke to the VP, who said I could call him to discuss, which I did! He was very gracious and forthcoming; we looked and discussed the NearMap photo, and he said he really didn’t think our house was a good candidate because the shadows are very long; in winter the sun won’t reach high enough above the south trees to the panels, and they simply won’t produce as desired. He also quoted a nearly exact price for the same system, off the top of his head.

I just don’t want to believe that part of the roof won’t work, especially if we trimmed high limbs…I’ve been watching the roof for several years, and it seems to nearly always be in full sun until at least 2-3pm.

I guess we will cancel the project for now. Is there a sun-sensor on the market that will record how many hours of sun that area of the roof gets?

So totally bummed,
Linda

Sure, there are devices out there, but being the middle of summer it’s probably easiest just to watch the roof and clock when the it’s in full sun, and when it stops being.

In the middle of summer you would want a lot more sun than just between 2-3pm. You’d want more like 9am - 5pm or similar.

Marty

Right - that roof area always (year round) gets FULL sun from sunrise (NO shade) until at least 2pm, but I will start recording what time of afternoon the shade hits, twice a month, for the next year!

Perhaps prices here will come down enough to make it feasible. And we are meeting with our tree guy this week, and will see what he says about tree age and trimming, etc.

Thanks for all your help and advice!!
Linda
