I think batteries can be worth it, but only when they actually match how the household uses power.
If most of your solar gets exported during the day and you end up buying a lot back in the evening, then a battery starts to make a lot more sense. If you already use most of your solar directly during the day, the value is usually less exciting.
I also think people mix up backup value and payback value. Some homes want a battery mainly for resilience, not just for a faster return, and that is still a fair reason.
